Merdeka Awards 2010
Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Dr Yong Hoi Sen from Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Malaya, the joint winner in the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement, Merdeka Awards 2010. Professor Emeritus Dr Yong Hoi Sen and Professor Dr Harith Ahmad are the joint winners in the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement category.

The Biological Sciences Graduate Congress (BSGC) is an annual activity undertaken by three collaborating universities: the University of Malaya (UM), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Chulalongkong University (CU), which take turns to host the event.  Over the years, the BSGC has gained prominence as a premier congress in the Asia Pacific region.  Its unique feature of a congress wholly organised by graduate students for graduate students has attracted participation from many academic and research institutions in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia.  Good quality scientific papers are presented in an atmosphere of friendly competition for awards.

UM Won Awards at the 14th Biological Sciences Graduate Congress (BSGC)

Once again, our graduate students did UM proud by winning 7 awards (out of 24) at the 14th Biological Sciences Graduate Congress (BSGC) held in Chulalongkorn University (CU), Bangkok, 10-12 December 2009.  The BSGC is an annual event jointly organized by UM, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and CU with participants coming from other universities and Asia Pacific countries besides UM, NUS and CU.  There were 4 themes in the 14th BSGC and within each theme there were oral and poster presentations.  6 awards were given for each theme: 3 for oral (1 best and 2 honorable mention) and 3 for poster (1 best and 2 honorable mention).

Rimba Ilmu Botanical Garden

Rimba Ilmu is a tropical botanical garden, set up in the University of Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is modelled after a rain forest garden concept rather than a formal flower garden. It emphasises the flora of the Malaysian and Indonesian region. Together with the living collections of over 1,600 species, the Rimba Ilmu also houses the University of Malaya herbarium (acronym KLU) and has its own Environmental Education Programme. The Rimba Ilmu is a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and the South East Asia Botanic Gardens Network.
